What things cost in Munich right now

Each dot is a place within the city, the dashed line marks the median, and if you tap a dot you can see where it is.

Cheapest: Drei Mühlen Ludwigsvorstadt €3.80

Aperol Spritz 56 prices All Aperol prices

Look it up, add it, tap “That’s right”

You don’t need anything to look up prices. And whenever you spot one, a few seconds of your time help everybody else.

  1. Map of Munich’s old town in the app with price tags for Aperol Spritz

    Look it up

Pick what you fancy. The map and the list show what it costs near you, cheapest first, and when the price was last confirmed. With “Open now” you only see places that are open right now.

  2. Adding a new price of 4.60 euros for a Halbe Helles at a Munich pub

    Add a price

Seen a price? Type it in or take a photo of the menu and the app reads the prices for you. If you are standing in the place, your entry counts twice as much as one made from the sofa.

  3. A place in the app with its prices and buttons to confirm or change them

    Confirm

If a price is still right, one tap on “That’s right” is enough. Then everyone else knows it is current and not from three years ago.

The screenshots show the app in German. On an iPhone set to English, the whole app is in English.

A small thank you: every price and every “That’s right” earns you a gingerbread heart in your profile.

What colour is Munich to you?

Ask anyone in Munich and you will get a firm answer, so the app simply asks you too. Pick blue or red under Profile & settings and the colours of the whole app change with it, right down to the icon on your home screen.

I stay out of it and just show you the prices. The price colours stay the same either way, so cheap is always green. More on blue or red

Only prices someone has actually seen

I wanted to know which pub round the corner still sells a Halbe for under five euros, without opening five menus online first. So I collect the prices, and anyone in Munich can help.

Live only after approval
A new price only goes live once it has been approved. Guesses and leaflet offers don’t make it onto the map. How that works
Open about the maths
There is only a median once there are five prices, and every single price is in a spreadsheet you can download.
No account
No login, no email, no real name. You can delete your contributions yourself at any time.
Also as a widget
See the cheapest Halbe near you on your home screen without opening the app.
In English and German
The app follows the language of your iPhone. Halbe, Breze and Leberkässemmel keep their Bavarian names and get a short explanation.
No ads, nothing to buy
No ads, no in-app purchases, and no pub can buy a better spot on the map.

Who is behind it?

Servus, I’m Paul Hajek from Ismaning, just outside Munich. I built Munich Prices in my spare time, as a private individual with no company behind it.

I copied the first prices off the pubs’ menus myself, each with its source and date. That is the 202 from within the city counted above, plus 20 from just outside that the app also shows on the map. If a price looks odd to you, write to me and I’ll check it.

Writing for a paper, a magazine or a broadcaster? All the numbers and the method are on the price index page, along with every single price as a spreadsheet. Happy to answer questions, the address is at the bottom.

Questions people often ask

How much is a beer in Munich?

A Halbe Helles, the half litre of pale lager you get in almost every pub, costs between €3.80 and €6.80 within the city right now. The median is €5.00, so in half of the places you pay less. All prices by pub, brewery and neighbourhood are on the beer prices page.

When is the app out, and what does it cost?

Soon. Friends are still trying it out before it goes on the App Store. It is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases. If you would like to hear when it is out, or help test it before then, both take one tap at the bottom.

Where do the prices come from?

Most of the first prices I took from the menus the pubs have on their websites, each one looked up by hand. After that they come from people in Munich who are standing in a beer garden, at the butcher’s or at a kebab shop and add the price or take a photo of the menu.

How does a new price get onto the map?

Every new price first goes into a queue that nobody else can see, and I go through it myself. A photo of the menu or the sign makes it quickest, because you can see the price straight away. If a price looks unusually high or low, the app flags it and I take a closer look. Only then does it go live for everyone, and since anyone can later tap “That’s right” or add a newer price, an outdated one gets noticed quickly too.

Do I need an account?

No. To look up prices you need nothing at all. If you add prices yourself, the app shares them through iCloud, so being signed in to iCloud on your iPhone is enough. You don’t need an account of your own, an email address or your real name.

What happens to my data?

There is no tracking, no advertising and no analytics, on this website either. Your location stays on your iPhone. If you are within 150 metres of the place when you add a price, you have most likely seen it yourself, so it counts double. All that is stored for this is the distance, never where exactly you were. You can delete all your contributions yourself at any time. The details are in the privacy policy.

Want to hear when it’s out?

One tap and I’ll let you know as soon as the app is on the App Store. If you’d rather not wait, you can test it on your own iPhone before then. A missing place or a wrong price can go to the same address.
